The golf range in Rosscarbery was opened in 1992 by my parents and since then we have tried to provide as good a service as possible to local golfers and our many visiting tourists. A lot of work and cost goes into keeping the golf range looking good for all our patrons. The grass has to be cut, mats and tees replaced, range balls collected daily and new ones bought as the need arises. A trend started to form around 10 years ago at this time of year. Golf balls were being stolen off the range field, especially at night time. We now collect balls ever night when possible but some times it just isn't possible. We have never in the past made a big issue of this but we would replace the stolen stock and try to manage it. Every year we buy roughly 10,000 balls. This year it has just gone too far. Over the past month there has been over 4000 balls(that's right 4000) stolen from the field, mostly at night time. In the past week alone we estimate that 2000 have been stolen. We know that people have been hitting them into the sea from Rosscarbery pier and also we have been told that they are regularly used on the pitch and putt course. We cannot understand the selfish and simple minded people that make the effort to go up to the golf range at night to steal golf balls! We now have to order new balls which probably won't arrive in time for next weeks June bank holiday weekend. This in turn means that it is very possible that we will have to close the golf range section of Smugglers Cove until the new stock arrives. I sure hope this has been worth it for these selfish idiots who are spoiling everybody's practice, fun and putting extra unnecessary costs on my business. We are constantly catching people trying to steal balls during daylight hours. We are in the process of getting our CCTV images in order to give to the Gardai. If anybody has seen or knows of anybody who is at this, I would appreciate being told in confidence.
